The gateway course for the Minor in Writing has offered me many valuable opportunities to develop as a writer. This class allowed us the freedom to pursue the assignments in any form or direction we saw fit, so I had a lot of fun completing them.

The four main segments of the course included the Manifesto, Project One (Why I Write), Project Two (Repurposing) and Project Three (Remediation). Our first assignment, "Writer's Manifesto", can be found on the home page of my portfolio, and the rest are located below over their descriptions.

repurposing.

For the second project, we were asked to repurpose a previous piece of writing in some way, which entails changing its format or audience in some significant manner.

I chose to repurpose two pieces of writing that I thought worked well together: an application letter to the New England Literature Program describing why American Psycho is one of my favorite books, and a blog review of Stephen King's It that I wrote a few months back. Building off of these two pieces of writing, I made my own attempt at some horror fan fiction.

The next step to our repurposing project was to rearrange its format into a different type of media.

Because I've always been curious about learning how to make and edit videos, I decided to film a book trailer for the partial novella I wrote for the repurposing project, based on the trailer for Stephen King's recent release, Doctor Sleep.

It was challenging to film a promotional video for a piece I had in reality only written a small fraction of, so the project map I had outlined for the repurposing piece was an incredibly helpful tool.

Our first project for the Minor in Writing was to compose a personal reflection on the reasons why we write.

Although some writers like to pinpoint an exact moment in their youth when their precocious younger selves assuredly proclaimed to be writers, I see my development into a writer as a progression of moments, choices and experiences. This assignment allowed me to compile and consider some of those experiences in order to better understand who I am as a writer today. All in all, it as a fruitful trip down memory lane if I do say so myself.
