why i write.

At first I wasn't sure how much I would enjoy writing this assignment. To me, it seemed fairly obvious why I write - I've always enjoyed it. I didn't think there was more to it than that, but "because I like to" generally doesn't make for a very good essay.

So I tried to dig a little deeper.

Rummaging through my memories with the help of my parents led to some interesting discoveries. As with most people, my relationship with writing has been continuously changing since I first learned to form those looping characters of language, and it isn't only defined by the dramatic diary entries and horse-themed adventures that I wrote interspersedly. Although important, these pieces of writing were few and far between (I was always a terrible diary-keeper). The majority of my evolution took place in the notes I passed to my classmates, my carefully crafted AIM away message, and the doodles and song lyrics that always framed the pages of my notebook.

In this assignment I tried to nail down some of these small moments, the stepping stones to my metaphorical road to writing, and in the end I found there was a lot more to say about why it is that I write than I originally thought.

back to the minor.
